Is PrEP right for you?

Deciding to take PrEP is a big decision. PrEP gives you control over your sexual health and peace of mind while having sex. Think about taking PrEP if you have multiple sexual partners, partners whose HIV status is unknown, or if you have sex in an area where HIV is common. PrEP also protects you if you inject drugs or if you have a partner that does.

Most insurance programs cover PrEP. If you don’t have insurance, we can help you find assistance programs to cover the costs of your PrEP medication, labs, and visits so there will be $0 cost to you.*

Getting a PrEP prescription

If you think PrEP may be right for you, here’s how you’ll get started.

Initial Visit or Labs

If you’re ready to get started with PrEP and don’t have any questions, we’ll get your labs ordered right away.

Or, if you have questions and want to talk with your provider about getting on PrEP first, then schedule an initial appointment. You can learn about treatment options and what to expect while taking PrEP.

Before you start PrEP, your provider will order an HIV test and other lab tests. You must be HIV-negative to start PrEP. You’ll also schedule your first PrEP appointment at your initial visit or after your lab results.

If you’re taking the oral pill Descovy or Truvada, your first appointment can be done online and you’ll get your first 30 days of pills.

If you are getting the PrEP injection Apertude, you’ll come into the office for this first appointment and to get your shot.

After your first visit, we’ll want to check in on how you’re doing. You’ll need to schedule a 30-day follow-up appointment, either virtually or in-person. If you’re getting Apertude for PrEP, this visit will be in-person to get your second injection.

During this appointment, your provider will check in with you to see how you’re doing on PrEP and if you’re experiencing any side effects or challenges. If taking PrEP pills, your provider will prescribe the next 90 days of pills.

For Apretude, you’ll get your second injection. This shot will cover you for the next 60 days. After that, you’ll come into the office every 60 days to receive your PrEP injections.

If you’re taking PrEP pills, you’ll have follow-up visits every 90 days. These can be done either in-person or online. For the PrEP injection, you’ll come in for a shot every 60 days to stay protected against HIV.

You’ll get a lab test before each visit to ensure you are HIV-negative. But don’t worry, we’ll send you reminders so you don’t forget. To receive reminders, sign up for PrEP Concierge.

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medicine available in pill or injectable form that protects you against HIV from sex or injection drug use. PrEP is an antiviral medication that stops the virus from multiplying in your body. It can be especially helpful if you have multiple sex partners, sex partners whose HIV status is unknown, or you have sex in an area where HIV is common.

PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV. It’s up to 99% effective at preventing new HIV infections when you take the daily pill correctly or get your injections on time. Just as importantly, PrEP gives you peace of mind, knowing that you’re protecting yourself, your partners, and your community. And, for most people, PrEP is free or low-cost.

To get the best protection against HIV, you must take it exactly as directed by your healthcare provider and avoid missing doses or appointments.

For most people, PrEP is free or low-cost. PrEP is covered by most insurances. If you don’t have insurance, don’t worry. We’ll work with you to make sure money isn’t a barrier to getting you the PrEP medication you need.
